Hello friends,
We have a lot to catch up on.
On April 9th we wrapped up a tumultuous budget sitting in Province House. For many Nova Scotians, it’s been a chaotic time trying to understand how sudden cuts to grants and programs are going to affect their everyday lives. The passion and engagement we have seen from community members of all ages has fueled our work both inside the Legislature and out. In this time of uncertainty, it’s important that we keep looking out for each other. Keep writing to your MLAs about the issues that matter to you. Keep showing up and speaking up. Together, we are so much stronger and can make real change.
During the 27-day sitting, I had the opportunity to bring specific questions and concerns from Fairview-Clayton Park to the floor of the house, including unexplained high power bills, access to pre-natal care, and cuts to student and low-income bus passes. I questioned Ministers on the province’s plans to address rising food bank use in Nova Scotia, cuts to essential services like family resource centres, and cuts to the poverty reduction credit. More clips from the legislature can be found on my Youtube channel . If you have any questions on these topics or want to discuss anything you see here, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.
National Volunteer Week was April 19-25, and I’d like to take the opportunity to recognize and celebrate all the incredible individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making our community a better place. This is also a wonderful chance to highlight that the Provincial Volunteer Awards are now open for nominations. You can learn more about the awards and nominate one or more local heroes here.
If you are looking for ways to give back but aren’t sure where to start, please get in touch! We’d be happy to provide some ideas and connections to local organizations looking for support. To get started, please mark your calendars for our upcoming Community Clean-Up on May 23rd in collaboration with Hillside United Church and our neighbouring constituency of Clayton Park West. Stay tuned to my social media or reach out directly for all the specific details on how to join in.
Thanks for staying engaged in the issues that matter to Nova Scotians.
