Meet your MLA, Lina Hamid (she/her)
Lina is a proud Sudanese-Canadian. She and her 3 sisters were born and raised in Qatar. Her first language is Arabic.
In 2011, at 21 years old, Lina moved (alone) to Halifax. She transferred from College of the North Atlantic – Qatar to Saint Mary’s University. She graduated in January 2014 with a BComm in Marketing, with a minor in psychology.
Between her graduation and 2020, Lina worked as a marketing and sales representative in various positions and companies throughout the HRM. She has extensive background in marketing and management, and knows how to bring ideas to life. She has also proven that she is in it for the long-haul, rather than jumping from position to position.
Recognizing her need to do more than “just being” in the corporate world, Lina shifted her focus to the not-for-profit and social services sector when started volunteering at the Halifax Refugee Clinic and other organizations in 2018, looking to do something more meaningful and impactful. They offered a paid position in 2020 and she began as a Housing Support Working with the Halifax Refugee Clinic in June 2020. In her work with folks experiencing so much complexity and retraumatization due to the exclusionary nature of the various systems, her interest in policy and who makes those decisions that impact all of us was piqued.
Passionate about housing rights and shelter for all, Lina served co-chair for ACORN ‘s Mainland NS Chapter from March 2021 until June 2022. Lina contributed to CCPA’s “Keys to a housing secure future for all Nova Scotians” Report, released May 25, 2021.
In 2023, still feeling the call to serve while also making use of her background, Lina started at United Way Halifax as the Social Sector and Investment Manager. She was later promoted to Senior Manager for HRM under the newly formed United Way Maritimes. She is on Public Service leave.
Lina is happily married and has a 3 year old son, a 2.5 year old German shepherd (Onyx), a 12 year old cat (Diamond), and a 6 year old bearded dragon (Abbas).
